An Artist Statement from the Artist ...

Light and darkness, that is the basis of all my artworks.  I enjoy bringing the mystery of shadow and how it correlates to the lights in my subjects.
I frequently work quickly layering colors and moving my drawing media around  because I am striving for a specific mood in my art.  Depending on my moods, I may work in oil paints, charcoal, pastel, ink washes, or even markers.  Sometimes my artwork takes on a photo realistic form while other times its completely abstract.  The important aspect to me is finding the mystery and broadcasting that little something to the viewer.
I grew up in Michigan spending most of my time on Lake Erie doing things that most kids on the water do; fish, swim, and chase wildlife around.  I believe I was fortunate to live in Metro Detroit because it brought me to one of the best artworks collection in America at the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum.  Most of my time in the museum was spent staring at artworks that were non-descriptive and I had to add my own personal feelings to ‘complete the picture’.  Feeling strongly that there is a reason for all artworks, I work tirelessly to bring to my viewers the beauty which I see through my own eyes on paper.  Sometimes, only a hand-painted rendition that is full of energy and feeling can give a subject proper justice.

Thank you for taking the time to look, Scott C. Broughton
